Borghese Gallery at Christmas 2026Opening Days& Tickets

The gallery is closed on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, and on Monday 28 December. Christmas Eve, 26 December and the days up to New Year's Eve are regular opening days, so with a booked slot you can still see Bernini and Caravaggio over the holidays.

The short answer

Closed on Christmas Day, open most of the holiday week

The Borghese Gallery is closed on Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026, and it closes every Monday, including Monday 28 December. Christmas Eve (Thursday 24 December) and St Stephen's Day, or Boxing Day (Saturday 26 December), fall on regular opening days, so it normally opens on both. If you're spending Christmas in Rome, a pre-booked visit can be one of the most rewarding indoor plans of the trip, provided you choose the right date.

The museum is not a walk-in attraction: you must reserve a timed admission, even if you qualify for free entry. Holiday arrangements and special-event schedules can change, so check the final timetable on the official Galleria Borghese website before you make plans.

Regular opening days: 23, 24, 26, 27, 29, 30 and 31 December · Closed: 25 and 28 December · 1 January: listed as closed, check late December

Is the Borghese Gallery open at Christmas 2026?

This calendar follows the gallery's published regular schedule and its fixed Christmas Day closure. Dates marked open are expected regular opening days, not a confirmed special holiday announcement.

Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve hours: the museum's visiting page lists only its regular 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. hours and the closures on 25 December and 1 January. When we checked on 1 November 2026, no special or shortened hours for 24 or 31 December had been published. New Year's Day is listed as closed, although the museum opened from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on 1 January 2026; our New Year's Eve and New Year's Day guide follows the 2027 arrangements. Check the official visiting page and the booking calendar for your date nearer the time.

Don't assume a public holiday means the museum is closed, or that it brings extra opening hours. The official calendar and ticketing system take precedence. Monday 28 December 2026 is a normal weekly closure, not a holiday one.

Two-hour slots, capped numbers

Christmas opening hours and timed entry

Under its regular published schedule, the Borghese Gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the final entry at 5:45 p.m. Most admission slots allow a two-hour visit; the 5:45 p.m. session is shorter and finishes at 7 p.m. Our opening hours guide lists every slot.

The museum limits the number of visitors per session, which makes booking ahead especially important when you are travelling on fixed dates. Walking in the grounds of Villa Borghese is no substitute for admission to the gallery itself: they are different experiences, and the park needs no ticket.

If your Rome itinerary has only two or three free sightseeing days, choose your gallery date before booking other time-sensitive attractions. Otherwise a Christmas Day or Monday closure can force an awkward change of plans.

Fixed dates, limited slots

How far ahead should you book Christmas tickets?

For a Christmas-week trip, book as soon as your preferred date and time appear in the official booking system. There is no reason to wait until you arrive in Rome, particularly if you want a morning entry or a guided visit.

A sensible way to book

  1. 1

    Pick two dates

Choose at least two possible dates, avoiding 25 December and Mondays.

  2. 2

    Try the museum first

Check the official museum booking channel for timed admission.

  3. 3

    Compare a guided tour

Look at an independently run guided tour if you want expert commentary, or if the official tickets for your dates are gone.

  4. 4

    Read what is included

Confirm that the tour includes museum admission, that it is guided inside the gallery, and what the cancellation terms are.

  5. 5

    Keep your paperwork

Save the booking confirmation and bring any ID needed for concessionary admission.

For more detail, our Borghese Gallery tickets guide explains how booking works, and the sold-out guide covers what to do when your date is gone.

Ticket, small group or private

Are skip-the-line tickets worth it?

Every standard ticket comes with a reserved entry time, so a "skip-the-line" label does not mean you can arrive whenever you like. The museum runs no separate fast-track entrance. The meaningful difference is between ordinary admission and a guided tour that includes an entry reservation.

If price is your main concern, compare the total cost with the museum's official ticket, €16 plus the €2 booking fee. If you want a better understanding of Bernini's sculptures, Caravaggio's paintings and the collection Cardinal Scipione Borghese put together, a small-group tour can be worth the extra. None of the options below is a special Christmas product: they are the regular listings, and each one's calendar shows whether your December date can be booked.

Holiday trade-offs

Is Christmas a good time to visit the Borghese Gallery?

Yes, especially if your winter Rome trip needs a substantial indoor attraction. Inside the gallery the weather matters much less than at an outdoor archaeological site, and the sculptures and paintings can be enjoyed in essentially the same way in December as in spring. Our Borghese Gallery in winter guide covers the rest of the season, November to February.

There are also some holiday-specific trade-offs:

Why visit at Christmas? What to plan around
A memorable indoor art visit on cold or rainy daysTickets are for a specific date and time
Fits neatly into a two-hour museum slot25 December and Mondays are closed
Combines with a walk through Villa BorgheseThe park can feel chilly or damp
A calm contrast to Rome's busy festive streetsGuided tour availability and ticket prices vary

Don't count on any particular day being quiet. The museum controls how many people go in at a time, and winter does not guarantee last-minute tickets.

An easy half day

A practical Christmas-week Borghese Gallery itinerary

Book a 10 a.m. entry where one is available, and arrive early enough to finish the ticket checks and deal with any bags before your time.

  1. 1

    9:15–9:40 a.m. · Arrive at Villa Borghese

Approach the gallery through the park. If the weather is clear, enjoy the trees and the quieter side of Rome before heading inside.

  2. 2

10 a.m. to noon · Explore the gallery

Start with Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, The Rape of Proserpina and David, then look for the Caravaggio paintings and Raphael's Deposition. Individual works can be moved for loans, conservation or special exhibitions.

  3. 3

After noon · Lunch and a neighbourhood walk

Depending on the weather, carry on through Villa Borghese to the Pincio terrace and Piazza del Popolo, or head for the Spanish Steps for lunch and shopping.

  4. 4

    Late afternoon · Festive Rome

See the city's seasonal lights and squares, but check this year's event calendar instead of relying on earlier Christmas-market dates or installations.

Want a guide for both the gallery and the park? The gallery and gardens small-group tour covers both in about two and a half hours. For the walk in from the centre, see how to get to the Borghese Gallery.

A wet December day

What if it rains on the day of your visit?

A gallery ticket makes a useful anchor for an otherwise rainy December day. Plan your morning around the museum and keep the outdoor walks flexible. Wear comfortable shoes for the approach, carry a compact umbrella, and don't bring large backpacks or luggage: the museum restricts bags, and items that can't go into the rooms have to be checked in the cloakroom.

If heavy rain makes the park walk unpleasant, take a taxi or a bus to a nearby stop instead of planning a long stroll. Rome is still rewarding in wet weather, as long as the plan isn't full of outdoor stops that depend on sunshine. Our guide to the best museums in Rome has more indoor ideas.

If your date has gone

What if Christmas-week tickets are sold out?

First, check the other times on the same day, especially if your preferred morning session has gone. Then look at a neighbouring date, or a reputable guided tour with confirmed admission included. A guided product does not automatically have tickets once official admission sells out.

The museum also describes a limited, non-guaranteed last-minute ticket arrangement at its ticket office. That is no basis for a whole Christmas itinerary, and holiday demand can make the wait frustrating. The safest option is to book before you travel.

Don't buy from an unfamiliar reseller without confirming that the ticket is genuine, the exact date and time, and what the package includes. Our tickets sold out guide goes through the other options.

Frequently asked questions

Christmas 2026 at the Borghese, answered

Is the Borghese Gallery open on Christmas Day 2026?

No. The gallery lists 25 December as an annual closure, so it is closed on Friday 25 December 2026.

Is the Borghese Gallery open on Christmas Eve 2026?

Christmas Eve falls on Thursday 24 December 2026. Under the regular Tuesday to Sunday schedule the gallery is expected to open. No special Christmas Eve hours had been published when we checked on 1 November 2026, so check the museum's official notices and booking calendar for any change.

Is it open on 26 December 2026?

26 December falls on a Saturday, normally an opening day. Confirm the holiday arrangements and reserve a timed ticket before your visit.

Is it open on Monday 28 December 2026?

No, not under the current regular calendar. The Borghese Gallery closes on Mondays.

Can I buy Borghese Gallery tickets at the door during Christmas week?

The museum describes limited last-minute admission options, but entry is not guaranteed. Book in advance, especially for a short holiday trip.

Do I need a guided tour to see the gallery?

No. You can visit independently with a valid timed ticket. A guided tour adds interpretation; it does not replace the need for a reserved admission slot.

How long should I allow for a visit?

Allow around two hours inside for a standard session, plus time to arrive, check in and walk through the surrounding park. The late 5:45 p.m. entry is shorter.

Can I visit Villa Borghese park on Christmas Day?

Villa Borghese is a public park, separate from the museum. It can be a pleasant outdoor option on the day the gallery is closed, subject to the weather and any local access restrictions.

Before you book

Final planning advice

For Christmas 2026, the simplest plan is to reserve the gallery for 23, 24, 26 or 27 December, or 29 to 31 December, whichever date and session you can get. Keep 25 December and Monday 28 December free of museum plans, and check for special opening notices before you travel.

A well-timed visit gives you two hours with some of Rome's finest art and leaves plenty of the day for the festive streets, neighbourhood cafés and seasonal sightseeing.

To weigh up the options, compare Borghese Gallery tickets and guided tours and read our Borghese Gallery winter guide before you finalise the itinerary.
