Galleria Borghese Opening Hours,Entry Slots& Closing Days

Knowing the museum shuts at 19:00 isn't much use if you don't know entry is by fixed timed slot, that your two hours start whether you're inside or not, and that arriving at your slot time can already be too late.

Other experiences you might enjoy

Worth adding to your itinerary

Once your slot is booked, most visitors build the rest of the day around it — the Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel, the Colosseum and Roman Forum, a guided food or wine tour through Trastevere, or a day trip to Pompeii or Tivoli. A few more Rome experiences worth a look:

Two numbers, both correct

How many people are inside with you

You'll find two different figures quoted online, and both are technically correct — they just describe different scheduling generations. 180 people are admitted per hourly slot, which is the figure governing today's ticket sales. Because each visit lasts two hours and a fresh cohort enters every hour, two groups overlap, so up to about 360 people are inside at once.

Older sources — including some institutional pages that haven't been updated — describe a retired system of five discrete two-hour slots with the building cleared between them and a 17:00 last entry. If you find a page saying that, it's describing how the gallery used to work; the hourly model above is what's in force now.

Either way, the practical point stands: this is one of the least crowded major museums in Rome, and that's deliberate. Roughly 360 people spread across a two-floor villa is nothing compared with the crush at the Vatican.

The single most useful sentence on this page

Arriving on time

Be in the queue 30 minutes early

You need that half hour for security and the compulsory cloakroom — and if you're not there, the museum can release your place to standby visitors.

Late arrival costs you

Your exit time doesn't move. Turn up 40 minutes into an entry and you may have twenty minutes of art ahead of you.

The exit is enforced too

Visitors consistently describe a warning bell at about the one-hour-fifty mark and staff clearing rooms soon after. The café and bookshop are more relaxed, so most total visits run closer to two and a half hours.

Fixed and unexpected

Closing days and unexpected closures

Fixed closures: every Monday, 25 December, and 1 January.

A handful of things can close the gallery at short notice: national culture-sector strikes, which affect Italian state museums periodically and are usually posted on the museum's own channels rather than anywhere you'd think to look; high-wind weather ordinances, since Villa Borghese is full of umbrella pines; and occasional short closures between exhibition installs.

  • The upper picture gallery has closed for renovation in the past, though it has now fully reopened
  • Storeroom visits have been suspended at times
  • The Secret Gardens beside the villa open only seasonally or for special events, not continuously

None of this is common, but none of it is rare enough to ignore if you're building a trip around one slot. Check the museum's news page a day or two before you go.

First Sunday, and a few others

Free days in 2026

The gallery takes part in Italy's national free-admission scheme — free doesn't mean free of process.

Free days

  • The first Sunday of every month
  • 25 April, 2 June and 4 November
  • Hours are unchanged: 9:00–19:00, last entry 17:45

The conditions that catch people out

  • Booking is still compulsory and the reservation fee still applies
  • Tickets release only 10 days ahead and go quickly
  • No last-minute tickets are sold at the door on free days

Rome's civic-museum free schemes for residents don't apply here — the Borghese is a state museum, not a city one. If a free-day slot is gone, our sold-out guide covers every remaining route in.

Beyond the normal hours

Evening openings and special events in 2026

All three need their own booking, and dates should be checked against the museum's official calendar.

Periodic

Extraordinary evening slots

An occasional 18:45–20:00 shift at a reduced price of around €11 plus the booking fee, run on some Thursdays and Fridays. Periodic, not permanent.

23 May 2026

Notte dei Musei

Rome's museum night runs city-wide 20:00 to 02:00; the Borghese has offered a symbolic €1 admission for an evening window. Booking required, and slots vanish fast.

17 Jul – 8 Aug 2026

Racconti di luce

A video-mapping projection on the villa's rear façade, Fridays and Saturdays from 21:15, watched from the garden. The museum stays open until 23:00 on those nights.

Free, always open

Villa Borghese park itself

Open dawn to dusk year-round with no ticket needed — a seasonal gate service runs at the formal entrances, staffed later into the evening in summer.

Timing strategy

Which slot should you choose?

  • Quietest visit: the 9:00 opening slot, or the late 17:00 and 17:45 entries
  • Cheapest ticket: the 17:45 slot, roughly 75 minutes instead of 120
  • Avoid if you can: the 11:00 slot, which draws the most tour groups and sells out first — mid-morning generally, 10:00 to 13:00, is peak
  • Quietest days: Tuesday to Thursday. Weekends are busiest, and the Monday closure pushes some pressure onto Tuesday
  • Quietest months: November and winter weeks outside holiday periods; July and August are peak

One more consideration genuinely worth weighing: light. The ground-floor rooms holding the Bernini marbles take strong natural light through the afternoon, and enthusiasts argue the mid-to-late afternoon slots show the carved surfaces at their best — informed opinion rather than official guidance, but a real trade-off against the quieter morning if you're going for Apollo and Daphne specifically.

Common question

One more question before you book

How many people are allowed in the Borghese Gallery at once?

180 visitors are admitted per hourly slot. Because visits last two hours and cohorts overlap, roughly 360 people are inside at any given time. Older sources describing 360 per slot with a 17:00 last entry are referring to a retired scheduling system that is no longer in use. For how that compares with Rome's larger museums, see our homepage FAQ.
